She is undoubtedly one of the great “femmes fatales” of world literature: Madame Bovary was revered as a freedom-loving feminist as well as insulted as an adulterous whore, and so the brilliantly written scandalous novel continues to inflame emotions to this day. Farmer's daughter is looking for a man: As a simple girl from the country, the beautiful Emma Rouault marries the widowed country doctor Charles Bovary. Not a bad match. Madame Bovary should consider herself lucky! But the new life in Yonville turns out to be nothing more than a lower-middle-class prison for the imaginative Emma, and she soon suffers so much from the increasing confinement of small-town life that she never misses an opportunity to escape from it. When she meets the seductive landowner Rodolphe Bolanger, a risky way out seems to open up - and as an impetuous romantic, she puts everything on one card to follow her dreams and her heart. Immediately after its publication in 1857, it even brought the then 35-year-old author to court for immorality. He narrowly escaped a guilty verdict and prison. It is and remains a timeless story about the destructive power of our dreams. Admission: 19 p.m. The Hilden town hall is barrier-free accessible
