The city in the green

The city of Heiligenhaus is located in the countryside, very multifaceted and has a long history. Heiligenhaus is well connected to the Rhine-Ruhr metropolis and is located in neanderland, not far from the major cities of Düsseldorf, Essen and Wuppertal.

On the way to Heiligenhaus

The extensive range of leisure and cultural activities comes partly from districts steeped in history, such as the abbot's kitchen. The listed building Museum abbot's kitchen, a former country school from 1908, was expanded in 2002 with a local history collection. Together with the Fire Brigade Museum, Forest and Water Museum and the environmental education center the merger forms a monument and local recreation area, the MuseumsLandschaft Abtsküche.

Heiligenhaus is also known for its diverse range of events and creates its own local cultural profile with numerous cultural events. The city's culture office organizes city and museum festivals, Christmas markets, concerts, readings and much more with various cooperation partners such as the Aalto-Theater.

After a long hike or bike tour in the countryside, the restaurants, beer gardens or (farmer's) cafés along the route invite you to linger in Heiligenhaus. There are overnight accommodations in the barrier-free and bicycle-friendly city center of Heiligenhaus as well as close to nature on the outskirts.

Thanks to the PanoramaRadweg Niederbergbahn, Heiligenhaus, despite its hilly landscape, can also be passed by active people, such as cyclists or people who are out and about on foot or on inline skates, with almost no gradient. Since 2009, the illuminated wagon bridge, which is unique in Germany, has also been part of the Niederbergbahn panoramic cycle path, which is a magnet for many cyclists. Due to its topographical location, Heiligenhaus offers beautiful hiking trails with year-round unique views towards the Rhine and Ruhr, but also into the Bergisches Land.

Explore while hiking

The neanderland STEIG connects natural beauties and sights in neanderland. The moderately difficult stage 6 leads along the northern part of Heiligenhaus and impresses with creek valley experiences and high views. The neanderland STEIG discovery loop "Heiligenhauser Runde" inspires with varied sections through nature.
