The Kämpen were probably created in 1374 when the Rhine changed its course during a flood. The area is characterized by a wide variety of different habitats and serves as a floodplain for flood relief. In the Kämpen lies Haus Bürgel, a medieval feudal estate that emerged from a Roman fort. It houses a Roman museum, a biological station and a breeding facility for cold-blooded horses.
