European cooperation comes to life in the Upper Silesian State Museum in Ratingen's Hösel district: the museum, which has existed since 1983, has set itself the task of collecting, preserving and exhibiting the real cultural assets of Upper Silesia.
Visitors get a picture of the history and culture of the Silesian regions and thus also of today's Poland and the Czech Republic. Upper Silesia, once part of Germany, was shaped by German culture for centuries. Pioneering collaborations make it possible to marvel at valuable loans from German, Polish and Czech collections in the modern museum building. The coal and steel industry, which is comparable to that in the Ruhr area, is still an important source of income in the region today. The vivid comparisons in the permanent exhibition include the immigration of skilled workers and migration in the 20th century.
Numerous temporary exhibitions on cultural, social and economic history on the ground floor of the modern museum building complement the permanent exhibition on the upper floor. All areas are barrier-free accessible. The museum offers numerous lectures, guided tours and museum educational programs for all age groups. Children and young people as well as school classes can take part in action afternoons.
In addition to the exhibitions, there are now exciting escape rooms in the museum. At the Silesia Challenges, visitors and a team of journalists playfully immerse themselves in Upper Silesian history and culture.
