theme trail
Explore the city center of Mettmann on a varied hike through the city forest with the Goldberger pond and the beautiful Goldberger mill. Enjoy the gastronomy in the historic upper town before you reach the world-famous Neandertal with its award-winning museum along the evolutionary path.

The starting point of the "Evolution Path" discovery loop is the beautiful Mettmann train station from 1879, today the "Mettmann Stadtwald" Regiobahn stop. From there it goes through the city forest along the Goldberger Teich and the Goldberger Mühle towards the center.

In the historic upper town, which is dominated by the Lambertus church on the market square, there are many historic buildings to discover, such as the old mayor's office, which houses the city history house. Hikers can fortify themselves in one of the numerous bars before they reach the Neandertal along the gently babbling Mettmanner Bach on the evolution path that illuminates the development history of the city, the region and the valley.

Be fascinated by the bison, tarpans and aurochs in the Ice Age game reserve. Parallel to the Düssel, which meanders through the valley, the path continues in the direction of Haan-Gruiten on the first section of the neanderland STEIG back to the starting point.
