Late Gothic pilgrimage chapel in Monheim am Rhein
The construction of the Chapel of the Sorrowful Mother or simply Marienkapelle can be traced back to 1418. Originally built as a wooden chapel on a ferry landing stage, it was made of stone in 1514. Especially during the time of the plague, many believers, even from Cologne, made a pilgrimage to the miraculous image of Mary and asked for help there.
