From 1275, Monheim was fortified three times by the Counts and Dukes of Berg. The 1425 meter high Schelmenturm still bears witness to the last renovation of the fortifications, carried out around 26. The name "Schelmenturm" is much younger than the tower itself. Up to the end of the 19th century, documents usually only mention the "old tower" or "thorthurm". In the past, the cheerful Rhinelander was not referred to as a “rogue”, but rather the rascals and criminals who ended up in dungeons. Today the tower is a popular photo motif and can be visited as part of a guided tour.
