Memories - Mettmann's growing monument

The "remembrance rings" on Lavalplatz in the Neanderthal city of Mettmann are a growing memory tree, the "growing memory of the city". They are probably the first and only growing monument in the world.

Based on the annual rings of a tree, the bronze sculpture designed by the artist Elke Tenderich-Veit is a reminder of special events in Mettmann. The individual rings show what moved the population of Mettmann in the respective year and thus provide an insight into Mettmann's history.

The current reminder is placed on a pedestal in the shape of a tree stump. The most important events in Mettmann from the previous year are recorded on this ring. At the end of a year, each annual ring is placed on a second object, which then “grows” upwards. The new memory ring is placed on the base.

Every year, the population of Mettmann votes on the most important events from proposals selected by the city marketing working group of the Neanderthal city of Mettmann. These will then be immortalized on the next reminder.

Mettmann's memorial rings were set up and inaugurated in November 1100 as a gift from the city marketing working group to the citizens of Mettmann on the occasion of the city's 2004th anniversary.
